The
idea from dentistry that mouth tissue generally
reflects the overall health of patients was encouraging.
"After testing various cells of the mouth, I focused on
sublingual epithelial cells. These cells were very easy to
obtain non-invasively with mild scraping of the sublingual
area or floor of the mouth."
The
cells were placed on a carbon slide; once fixed
they had a long life span and required no special
treatments or coating for transport or analysis other than
fixative.
Sublingual
epithelial cells did not change and were very
stable. This is one reason they are also used in DNA
testing.
